What is a Wingback Chair?
Wingback chairs have been around for quite some time, and are defined by the inclusion of a set of wings on either side of the chair that extends from the backrest down into the armrests.
The renowned winged design was originally created for two main purposes. Given the history of the chair, it was frequently used in old large houses that were more susceptible to cool winds getting in. So, the first purpose of the wingback chair was to protect the sitter from drafts of wind.
The second purpose was to trap heat. Wingback chairs blocked the wind and were often situated in front of the fireplaces. The chair would face the direction of the fire so that the heat could become more easily trapped within the chair, creating an insulating warmth
Today, the same design premise is utilised in wingback chairs. They provide character to a space and can still very much be used for blocking winds and trapping heat. Outdoor wingback chairs, for example, could be a great option if you get a lot of strong winds in your area.
How Do I Style a Wingback Chair?
At Factory Buys, we believe style is just as important as comfort.
Wingback chairs are already stylish in their own right, but you can always add a little more character with different approaches.
Adding complementary textiles is one of the most effective ways of immediately styling your chair. These could include hanging a throw blanket over the head of the chair or a decorative pillow with similar or contrasting colours to the chair itself.
Styling can also come down to what else sits within the same area of the wingback chair. An eye-catching rug, for example, can be set in front of the chair to denote a clear seating space and give it a greater sense of presence within the room.
Rugs with complementing or contrasting colours can broaden the design language of the wingback chair and surrounding space. Or you could consider a side table and a gentle warm lamp to bring a greater sense of cosiness to your setup.
As wingback chairs were popular near fireplaces and remain a staple in reading nooks, having a bookshelf nearby or even lighting that mimics the gentle hue of a fireplace can add some true character.
Other touches like indoor plants and artwork can bring a cohesive sense of style and accessible luxury to your home.
What Kind of Interiors Does a Wingback Chair Suit?
While wingback chairs were (and still are) typically upholstered or utilise leather as their main material, there are now options that are designed for outdoor settings such as wicker wingbacks.
But regardless of whether you want an indoor or outdoor chair, the good news is that they can honestly work almost anywhere in the home. For inside, wingback chairs are often used in living room areas, bedrooms, or little reading nooks.
Given the various upholstered options you can choose from - utilising fabrics and textiles such as cotton, velvet, wool, linen or synthetic fabrics - you’ll find there is a look for almost any space.
Wingback chairs also come in various styles. While many still maintain a classic look with a relatively large overall size, there are also plenty of space-efficient options. They vary in height, wing design and overall footprint. The smaller wingbacks can be good options for smaller rooms or dense reading nooks.
In general, we’d say the main areas to avoid using wingback chairs are bathrooms, toilets, laundry rooms, and garages.
Are Wingback Chairs Comfortable?
Absolutely! They were designed with the comfort of the sitter in mind.
As touched on, the protruding wings were crafted to block out drafts and help lock in heat from fireplaces. Their design also provided additional support and promoted better posture. Most modern wingback chairs also make use of soft and comfortable materials like cotton, wool, velvet or leather.
These materials are well-suited all year round, though leather is more likely to make you sweat during the summer months.
Other wingback chairs, such as outdoor variants, are often made with a wicker-style construction and include a seating pillow or cushion for additional comfort.
Whatever wingback chair you opt for, you’ll find they offer plenty of comfort.
Are Wingback Chairs Out of Style?
Not at all. While the chair dates back to the 17th century, its design and construction have a timeless quality that’s seen it remain a beloved style into the 21st century.
With modern tweaks and interpretations, such as the Hamptons Wingback Chair, rocking wingbacks, and low-back options, the wingback is nowhere near close to being out of style.
