The first recorded use of a Christmas tree was in Germany,in 1539, when devout Christian reformer Martin Luther is said to have decorated a small evergreen tree with candles to celebrate Jesus' birth. This is likely where the modern custom of putting up a Christmas tree in the home originated to celebrate the holiday and the birth of Christ.
