How Do You Take Care of Leather Recliner Chairs?

Leather is a great material for a luxurious recliner, but it does require some mindful upkeep to get the absolute most out of it. Compared to many other materials, leather will notably degrade if not properly cared for.

Be sure to refer to the manufacturer's care instructions to see which specific precautions they recommend.

As general guidance for helping you get a long life out of your leather recliner, here are some care tips you should keep in mind:

  • Avoid placing your leather recliner chair in direct sunlight or near frequent heat sources. Sunlight fades and dries out leather, and heat similarly dries out and damages leather.

  • Do not use harsh chemicals when cleaning leather as they will likely damage it.

  • If you spill anything on the leather, immediately blot (don’t rub in) the liquid with a clean, dry cloth.

  • For stains, use a mild soap solution (a few drops of a gentle soap mixed with water). Dampen a cloth with the solution, gently wipe the stain, and then use another clean damp cloth to remove any soap residue. Dry off with a soft towel.

  • Regularly dust and vacuum your leather recliner to prevent dust and debris from setting into the material

  • Use a leather conditioner every 6 to 12 months to keep the leather supple and reduce the chances of it drying out and cracking.

What Interiors Does a Leather Recliner Suit?

Leather recliners work within a wide range of interiors thanks to their versatile design and uses.

They’re perfectly suited for living rooms, home theatres (especially with their reclining functionality), home offices, and so many other interiors.

Brown leather recliners work well in rooms with more earthy tones. They’d also be a great fit in a reading nook by wooden bookshelves or in a rustic recreation room.

Black leather recliners can have a more formal feel, which makes them a great option for home offices or any section of the home that has a more professional-looking aesthetic.

Are Leather Recliners Comfortable?

Absolutely. Leather recliners offer plenty of comfort as long as you make use of them in the right way.

As noted earlier, you’ll want to place your recliner in parts of your home where they won't be excessively exposed to strong heat sources or sunlight. With the use of a leather conditioner, you can maintain your leather recliner’s softness and malleability for years to come.

Leather recliners often become more comfortable over time. As you use it, the leather softens and shapes to your body, providing greater support and comfort.

Be mindful that on particularly hot and humid days, you’re more likely to sweat from leather. Conversely, on very cold days, leather is quite frigid to the touch until your body’s heat sets in.

On these days, you can place a blanket or sheet on top of the leather. Use a breathable material like cotton on hot days and an insulating material like polyester or merino wool on cold days.
